Healthier holiday trail mix recipes can be made by mixing up your own special trail mix concoction or gorp. Choosing healthy ingredients makes for a healthier mix.

Healthy holiday treats can be made for children and their class parties by mixing up a special Holiday trail mix or gorp using healthy (or healthier) ingredients. The following list of holiday trail mixes should be classified as "Healthier" rather than "Healthy" since the mixes include the addition of chocolate, marshmallows or peppermint (candy canes).

These trail mix recipes are not the healthiest of the trail mix recipes, but can be viewed as a fun Christmas treat that can be enjoy in moderation. Mixing one's own recipe also allows parents the option of controlling how much extra sweets get into the mix.

Starter Healthy Trail Mix or Gorp

The Healthy Trail Mix Recipes for Tweens article features a starter healthy trail mix or gorp (good old raisins and peanuts) with suggestions for different variations. Here is the Healthy Trail Mix Starter recipe followed by updated variations for making your trail mix a festive holiday one.

  • 1 large container of Black Raisins (16 ounces)
  • 1 jar of peanuts (16 ounces)
  • 1 bag of natural almonds (16 ounces)
  • 1 bag of roasted soy nuts (16 ounces)
  • 1 bag of natural sunflower seeds (16 ounces)

Directions:

  1. Mix all of ingredients in a very large bowl.
  2. Measure into individual bags, cups or other containers.

Yield: 10 cups of Starter Trail Mix

Holiday and Winter Variations of the Basic Healthy Trail Mix Recipe

These holiday trail mixes should be classified as "Healthier" rather than "Healthy" since the mixes include the addition of chocolate, marshmallows or peppermint (candy canes).

These trail mix recipes are not the healthiest of the trail mix recipes, but are a fun Christmas treat to enjoy in moderation.

A Snowman or "Snowman Poop" theme, this one named for the marshmallows. To the Starter Healthy Trail Mix add:

  • 1 bag mini marshmallows (8 ounces)
  • 1 bag of mini chocolate chips (dark chocolate) or dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) bar broken into pieces (4-6 ounces)

Yield: 11+ cups

Note: The amount of mix made will vary depending on the ingredients used.

Mmm's Magnificent Season Trail Mix

Christmas is a season for chocolate. To the Starter Healthy Trail Mix add:

  • 1 bag Christmas colored M&M's (16 ounces)

Hugs and Kisses Trail Mix (Hugs or Kisses)

Christmas is also the season for sharing hugs and kisses. To the Starter Healthy Trail Mix add:

  • 1 bag of Hershey's Kisses with Almonds (12 ounces) or
  • 1 bag of Hershey's Dark Chocolate Kisses (12 ounces) or
  • 1 bag of Hershey's Hugs (12 ounces)

Yield: 10+ cups

Note: The amount of mix made will vary depending on the ingredients used. If you use the Hershey's Kisses with Almonds, you may want to omit the Almonds from the Starter Mix.

Holiday Peppermint Trail Mix

Christmas is a time for Candy Canes and Peppermint. To the Starter Healthy Trail Mix add:

  • Peppermint Sticks broken into pieces (6 ounces)
  • Peppermint Candies (6 ounces)
  • 1 bag of Hershey's Peppermint Kisses (12 ounces)

Yield: 10+ cups

Note: The amount of mix made will vary depending on the ingredients used.
