Here are some tips on packing just the right items for summer camp, so a tween doesn't do without something important.
Summer camp is often one of the favorite memories from childhood. Every tween that spends time at one of these camps remembers the feeling of finally getting to be away from the family, and venturing out to do new and exciting things. For some, it’s terrifying. For others, it’s true freedom. However, when starting to plan what will be in the luggage for the week, here are some tips to help make sure nothing is forgotten. Clothing ItemsDepending on how long the summer camp is going to be, it is best to plan for several different situations. Many of today’s summer camps offer horseback riding, dirt bikes, rock climbing, as well as other traditional summer camp activities. Make sure a tween has shorts, jeans, and a swimsuit. But also pack a lightweight jacket, a long sleeved shirt, hiking boots, deck or swim shoes, and a hat. Pack enough clothes to allow for a change or two if needed. Toiletry ItemsOf course, remember to pack the basics such as:
However, also remember to pack sunscreen lotion, bug spray, band aids, triple antibiotic cream, sunburn relief ointment, and anti-itch medicine. If worst comes to worst, tweens can share items that one forgets to bring along. Most importantly, do not forget to include any medications that the tween takes regularly. If the camp allows and the child is old enough, aspirin or acetaminophen may also be packed. Camera, Books, Phone Cards and other Camp-Essential ItemsA camera is always a great idea, so a tween can bring back many memories with him. Consider packing a journal as well. A personal note from mom and dad can be a terrific help for the nights when a child is missing you. Include self-addressed stamped envelopes, stationary, and pens, so your kid can easily drop a line back home. Also consider packing:
Consider including a favorite stuffed animal, but make sure it’s not too big. Many summer camps require that kids bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Phone cards are also good to include, so a tween can call you. When sending money with a child, see if there is a way the money is kept by the adults until it is needed. Of course, a tween is old enough to pack his own bags with some adult supervision. Just help him out by making a list for him or picking up items that he may forget to include in his luggage. Summer camp can be a great experience for tweens, but it takes a little bit of planning in order to make sure a child heads off with everything he needs. If the camp is not too far away, a parent can always drop off something important if it is forgotten. However, don’t go running each time a tween calls and wants you to bring something. He will need to learn to do some things on his own. Enjoy the tween years of summer camping by making extra special memories for a child. Consider putting together a scrapbook of the photos a child has taken when he returns home. These days won't last forever.
