Winter break is almost two entire weeks off from school in most parts of the U.S. What will tweens do during this time? Here are some great ideas.
The winter holidays are coming soon and you will probably want to find plenty of activities to keep your tween busy. The days that they are out of school can feel a lot longer than they actually are when it is too wet or cold to go outside. This is especially true if you have a busy tween in the house. Below are some ideas that can help keep your tween busy during this winter break.
Never underestimate the usefulness and willingness of your tween when you need help around the house. If you are getting ready for the holidays, then get your tween busy. They will love helping you wrap gifts, send out the Christmas cards, and even bake in the kitchen. Give your tween plain white or brown paper and allow him to decorate it for wrapping paper. Let your tween be in charge of delivering holiday gifts to the neighbors. Have your tween help you come up with menus and shopping lists for upcoming parties and family meals. Not only will this keep your tween busy, but it will help you get things around the house finished, as well.
After the holidays are over and all the presents are unwrapped, the work is still not done. Employ your tween as the “official” maker and sender of the thank you cards. Provide your tween with thick card stock paper and allow her imagination to go wild in making her very own holiday thank you cards. Make sure your tween writes a nice sentiment in each one, and let them address and send the cards off himself. Tweens will appreciate the fact that you are giving them the responsibility.
Any snow day is a good day for a snow party! Gather up a few of your tweens closest friends and let them go wild outside building snowmen, snow forts, and having a snowball fight or two. Just make sure they are nice and warm, and have them come inside every now and then to warm up. Provide a hot lunch or some fresh baked cookies and hot chocolate. If you live in an area that does not see much snow, then have a party anyway, and let the kids make homemade ice cream or build forts out of ice cubes.
Winter is a perfect time to conduct a winter science experiment. You can find many ideas on the Internet that are fun for tweens. One great idea is to fill balloons with different amounts of water and set them outside. Record how long it takes each one to freeze. Depending on where you live and the weather, it could take several days. You can even add food coloring to the water and one the balloons are frozen, peel the balloon off and you are left with a colorful ball of ice.
