Learn to Play Guitar and Other Instruments

Summer is the perfect time to sign your tween up for music lessons. There are many options, and they can help forge away those boredom blues.

As I was about to sign my 10-year-old up for guitar lessons this summer, I realized that summer really is the best time to do this. My reasoning is that summer is generally a more relaxed time of year, and starting something new is less frustrating and more enjoyable. For instance, if you were to start flute lessons in the middle of a school year, it could be nerve-racking to a child to have to contend with school, homework, learning a new instrument, and finding time to just be a kid and play. On the other hand, in the summer, she does not have to worry about school and homework, so learning a new musical instrument can prove to be fun.

On the same note (pardon the pun), summertime gives your child a chance to try music lessons by giving it her all. Her mind is not cluttered with science projects or book reports. She is able to concentrate on what she is being taught, giving herself a chance to see if she really enjoys what she is doing. And, if she does like the instrument she is learning to play, then continuing into the school year is easier, and actually gives her something to look forward to. If she finds that she does not like the instrument as much as she thought she would, then giving it up is also easier in the summer, and lessons won't weigh on her mind as school starts to gear up again. Seems like a win-win situation to me. How about you?
