Using the Internet for School Work

Keeping Tweens Safe While Using the Computer

Many kids are using computers to help them with their homework and school projects. It's the age that we live in, and it's not going away any time soon.

I could easily put up a poll on this site and ask how many families have kids that use the Internet to do their school projects and homework, but that would be silly. Everyone falls into that category! In fact, tweens are getting their own laptops in middle school in many districts around the U.S. to help them with their schoolwork.

It can never be emphasized enough how important it is to keep your children safe online. They can run into an online predator, be subjected to cyber-bullying, and unknowingly fall into a bad website just because they typed in one wrong letter in the address. Let's use these safety reminders as a refresher course on how to keep our kids safe while surfing the web.

  • Have your computer connected to the Internet with a family-friendly Interent Service Provider (ISP).
  • If you see that your tween has found an unwanted website, contact your ISP to state your dislike for the material.
  • Keep your tween's computer in an open area of the house, so that you can monitor their activity.
  • Lay down the rules. Limit how much time your child can spend on the computer.
  • Use parental settings on your computer.

There are lots of other things you can do to protect your tween online, and if you would like to share your tips, please let us know! Visit our discussion board to leave a post.

The Internet is a powerful tool filled with knowledge, but it is not a place to let kids run free. Be an involved parent, and know what your kids are doing online at all times.
